Healey becomes first AG to sue Equifax over breach

BY Greg Ryan

Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healey made good on a threat to sue Equifax over its massive data breach, filing a lawsuit in Suffolk County Superior Court on Tuesday.

Healey appears to be the first state attorney general in the U.S. to bring an enforcement action against the company (NYSE: EFX) in court, though others like New York’s Eric Schneiderman have launched investigations. Her office sent a letter to Equifax last week that revealed Healey’s plans to file the lawsuit.

Nearly 3 million Massachusetts residents may have had their personal information exposed in the breach, which Equifax revealed to the public on Sept. 7. As many as 143 million consumers may have been affected nationwide.
